It’s nice to know it’s not just that you’ll never please everybody
Its that you’ll never fully please anybody
Not god
Or mommy
Or teacher
Or husband
Or you
Its a relief in a reality where
The audition never ends
The script they gave me keeps changing
And somehow we all got different lines anyway
I perform for applause
But dream for the absurd
The absurd dream:
to please the whole audience
A standing ovation is always half peer pressure anyway
Think about the last time you stood up and clapped
I bet you weren’t the one that started the slippery slope toward the delusion of singular thought
My stomach keeps the ledger of all the times I got it right
Or wrong
Barely balancing out enough
To keep the acid down
I’ll never please everybody
Because I’ll never fully please anybody
Even someone who loves me
Who keeps the acid down
if they are fully pleased by me
It’s proof
They are looking backwards
Through a distorted mirror
